Write Right! 5 Ways to Access Your Right Brain When Writing

If you feel creatively blocked then the chances are you are stuck in logical left-brained editor mode. Here are five ways to get those creative juices flowing again:

1 Click your amygdala forward! By doing some simple exercises designed to stimulate your frontal lobes you will stimulate blood flow, become more relaxed and more creative. Read my post about it here.

2 Write answers to questions, notes or ideas in longhand using your non dominant hand. For most people this will be the left hand, which is controlled by the right brain. The answers you get (if you can read them!) may surprise you.

3 Use mind mapping to make notes and cluster ideas around topics. Mind mapping (originated by Edward de Bono) is a much more natural way of note-taking and planning and appeals to your right brain.

4 Take some time out and copy a picture UPSIDE DOWN. This amazing technique, which I first saw in Betty Edwards’ book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain not only stimulates your right brain but will also turn you into an instant and brilliant artist.  You need a magazine photo, paper and a pen or pencil. Turn the photo upside down and then copy it, making sure you attention is just on reproducing the lines and funny shapes you see in front of you. I guarantee that when you turn the picture up the correct way you wwill be astounded!

5 Write as you listen to Baroque music (Vivaldi, Mozart). This is a well known language learning ploy and also used by accelerated learning specialists as the rhythm of the music (usually 60 beats per minute) actually stimulates both left and right sides of the brain.
